Ell Halls

The west ell hall (pictured here) provides access from the kitchen and service areas to the ell and the second-floor rooms. This stairway would have been used mainly by servants and family.

At the far end of this hall, an interior hall connects the ell rooms to the second floor of the main house.

Charley Longfellow's bedroom was behind the bookcases shown here, and his Scottish terrier slept outside his bedroom door.

After 1871 Henry Longfellow added bookcases to this hall.

The Gothic wallpaper dates from about 1850 and was probably installed by the Longfellows.
